MOTAGARA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL

Motagara Girls Secondary School is a public school situated in Nyamira County, near Kisii.

The school is committed to offering quality education based on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), with a strong focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
However, significant infrastructural challenges, such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and limited financial resources, hinder effective learning.
With an enrollment of 457 girls, the school faces overcrowded classrooms.
The school relies on river and rain water for its water supply, but seasonal fluctuations have led to frequent shortages, forcing students to leave school grounds in search of water, posing a danger to the girls.

The school’s primary sources of funding—government capitation and parental fees—are insufficient to cover operational costs, staff salaries, and necessary infrastructure improvements. Many students come from impoverished backgrounds, with some unable to afford school fees, including the purchase of essential items like dormitory beds.
Dormitories are overcrowded, and the dining hall has been converted into a makeshift dormitory to accommodate all students.

Funding is required to address the school’s urgent infrastructure needs and improve the learning environment for all students.

Sanitary Towels
Project

We provide reusable sanitary towels to ensure dignified menstrual hygiene, improving attendance and welfare for girls.

In Motagara Girls’ Boarding Secondary School, many students face significant challenges due to poverty, particularly when it comes to accessing essential hygiene products like sanitary towels. Without affordable sanitary products, girls are forced to resort to unhygienic alternatives, which can jeopardize their health and academic performance.

LEAF is committed to providing reusable pads so every girl can experience her period with dignity and comfort, reducing absenteeism and promoting well-being.

Your donation will help continue this vital mission and ensure every girl has access to dignified hygiene.

Computer Laboratory
Project

Equips the school with computers and digital resources to enhance ICT skills and prepare students for modern careers.

Access to digital skills is crucial for academic success and improved career prospects.
Motagara does not have a fully equipped computer lab, limiting students’ exposure to digital skills.

A modern computer laboratory will empower students with essential ICT knowledge, enhancing their ability to access information, engage in research, and develop vital skills for self-employment and/or the modern job market – ensuring they are equipped to thrive in a technology-driven world.

Motagara Girls Secondary School Computer Project was officially kicked off in January 2025, thanks to donations from LEAF of 1 Desktop Computer and 1 Epson Printer to the school! The need remains immense for the 400+ students.

Support this project to provide these young girls with a comprehensive and equitable digital education.

Washrooms
Project

Construction of modern and hygienic washrooms to improve the hygene, health, safety and comfort for all.

Current sanitation facilities are inadequate, with a student-to-toilet ratio well above recommended standards, putting girls’ health at risk. Building modern restrooms will improve hygiene, enhance safety, and provide a healthy and respectful environment.

This overcrowding not only compromises student comfort but also poses serious health risks, as poor sanitation facilities increase the likelihood of disease outbreaks that can negatively impact students’ health and academic performance.

This project will serve as a critical step toward addressing these challenges and providing a safe, supportive environment for the young girls of Motagara Girls Secondary School.

Your support is essential to sustainably improve student health and well-being.

Dormitory
Project

Reduces overcrowding in the dormitories by providing enough beds and spaces, promoting student health and optimal concentration.

Many students at Motagara are forced to share beds or sleep in makeshift spaces due to a lack of beds and dormitories at the boarding school.

This situation not only compromises their comfort and well-being but also affects their ability to rest properly, which can hinder their academic performance.

While some efforts have been made, including the donation of a few beds, there is still a critical need for more resources to ensure that every girl has a safe and comfortable space to sleep.

Help us create a dignified sleep environment conducive to the growth of every student.

Science Laboratory
Project

Builds spacious science labs to better support hands-on STEM learning and improve science education under the CBC curriculum.

The school in Kisii urgently needs a twin science laboratory to support its focus on STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The existing laboratory facilities are overcrowded, limiting hands-on learning essential to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), hence students miss out on key experiments and practical skills.

Building a spacious, well-equipped lab will enhance science learning, improve academic performance, and better prepare students for future careers in science and technology.

Your donation can make all the difference. Every contribution, helps build this lab and transform the lives of these young girls.
Thank you for being a part of this wonderful project!

Home Science Laboratory
Project

Creates a fully equipped lab for practical life skills training in cooking, tailoring, and hospitality to promote self-reliance and employability.

The School in Kisii is looking to build a well-equipped home science laboratory to support its students’ practical learning and skill development.

The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) places a strong emphasis on hands-on training, particularly in the home science subject, to equip students with essential practical life skills in areas such as food preparation, hospitality, catering, and garment-making.

Unfortunately, the school currently lacks the facilities to effectively teach this subject.

These skills are crucial for fostering self-reliance and opening future employment opportunities. By investing in this infrastructure, we can empower the girls at Motagara with valuable skills that not only enhance their education but also prepare them for successful careers and greater independence in the future.

Your donation can make all the difference, and helps build this lab to transform the lives of these young girls.
Thank you for being a part of this wonderful project!

Borehole Drilling
Project

Drilling a well will provide clean water to the school and community consistently, improving hygiene and reducing school interruptions.

The School in Kisii is facing a critical challenge with its water supply.

Frequent water shortages often force girls to leave school to collect water from the river, putting them at risk and losing valuable classroom time.

To address this situation, the school is planning to drill a well, ensuring reliable access to a clean and sustainable water source. This project will significantly improve hygiene, reduce the risk of water-related diseases, and facilitate meal preparation.

Beyond the school, this well will also benefit the local community, including the church, a nearby primary school, and a health center, strengthening Motagara’s social and community-building role.

Your donation can make a difference. Support this vital project and help us provide students and the community with a healthier, safer, and more nurturing environment.

Kids Day Out
Project

Organizes educational outings to broaden students’ horizons and stimulate their ambitions beyond their usual rural environment.

We are excited to organize a transformative school excursion for the students of the School in Kisii, giving them with the rare opportunity to visit Nairobi, Mombasa, and some of Kenya’s iconic national parks.

For many of these young girls, this journey beyond their local community is a rare privilege. They will be able to explore the rich culture, history, and nature of their country, experience the excitement of big cities, and admire the spectacular beauty of the wildlife and landscapes in the national parks.

This experience will broaden their horizons, strengthen their sense of belonging to a larger community, and awaken their dreams, giving them the confidence to build a bright future.

You can make a difference: support this project and offer these girls this unique adventure that will enrich their lives and open their hearts to the world. Every donation helps!
