THE SCHOOL OF HOPE IN KIBERA SLUMS

The School of Hope was established in the year 2000 in the heart of Kibera Slums, with a mission to uplift the less fortunate and provide a safe haven for children facing immense socio-economic challenges. Serving as both an educational institution and a sanctuary, the community school offers children not only education but also vital meals, ensuring they have the nourishment and care needed to thrive.

Today, the school serves 60 students, supported by a dedicated team consisting of one qualified teacher and three volunteer teachers. These teachers, a mix of passionate volunteers and recent graduates, work tirelessly to provide quality education despite the many hurdles they face.
Financially, the school struggles as most parents cannot afford to pay school fees, often leaving the institution unable to collect enough funds to operate smoothly.

As a result, many children are sent home at the end of each month due to unpaid fees, creating an unstable learning environment. Over the years, the school has collaborated with InterNations Changemakers on various projects aimed at improving educational experiences and ensuring continuous learning.

Going forward, the school hopes to stabilize its operations and help provide a secure future for its students.
Funding is required to address the school’s urgent infrastructure needs and improve the learning environment for all students.

Kids Day Out
Project

Every quarter, we take the children of Kibera to discover green parks in Nairobi so that they can enjoy nature and play freely outside the slums.

We are excited to host an enriching excursion for the children of the School of Hope in Kibera, giving them the opportunity to experience the beauty of nature in a green park within Nairobi.

For many of these children, access to open spaces with grass and trees is rare. Their environment often lacks clean, safe playgrounds, and some rarely leave the slum. The nearest public playground is far from the school, making it difficult for younger children to reach. As a result, the school often uses a nearby clearing, and it lacks the basic amenities that would make playtime enjoyable for children.

LEAF aims to make this a quarterly event and invites you to help turn this vision into reality.

Your support will help cover entrance fees, transportation to and from the park, lunch and water (including their favorite french fries and soda), afternoon ice cream, and sports equipment like footballs and toys.

Take part in this wonderful initiative and help us bring these moments of happiness to the children of Kibera!

Volunteering
Projects

Engages local and international volunteers in teaching, mentorship, and support roles to improve education and life skills at the school.

School Facilities
Project

We renovate classrooms, build toilets, and create a playground for the children to learn and thrive in a healthy environment.

At School of Hope, in the heart of Kibera, we have a clear mission: to provide quality education to children living in one of Nairobi’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Here, poverty, overcrowding, and a lack of infrastructure make learning difficult and hinder students’ growth.

With limited access to basic facilities as a community school, the school faces significant challenges:
Currently, classrooms are makeshift, unsafe, overcrowded and poorly equipped.
Washrooms are outside the school premises, insufficient, lack water, and are unhygienic.
Additionally, the school lacks a proper playground, which deprives children of essential moments of physical activity and relaxation.

By addressing these critical needs, the project will help enhance students’ learning experiences, improve their health and hygiene, and provide a safe space for physical and emotional growth.

Together, let’s build a more dignified future for the children of Kibera. Your support can change their daily lives.

Schoool Feeding
Project

Every day, we aim to provide balanced meals to children so that they have the energy to learn and stay at school.

At the School of Hope, in the heart of Kibera, a vital project is underway: providing children with a nutritious meal every day.

In Kibera, many families struggle with food insecurity, and children often come to school without having a proper meal, which significantly impacts their ability to concentrate in class and thrive, as well as their overall well-being, .

The school feeding program ensures that every student receives at least one balanced meal a day, helping to combat malnutrition and hunger.

By addressing this basic need, this project doesn’t just nourish bodies—it also nourishes minds and dreams. It creates the conditions for peaceful learning and helps break the cycle of poverty, giving every child a real chance at building a better future.

Your support can make all the difference. By contributing to this project, you’re providing more than just a meal: you’re providing hope, dignity, and a real chance at success.

Sponsorship
Project

We help children from families in difficulty by covering their school fees, so that they can continue their studies without worry.

At School of Hope in Kibera, we have a simple but essential mission: to provide quality education to children from Nairobi’s most vulnerable families.
In Kibera, poverty is widespread, with many families struggling to afford basic necessities, hence, paying school fees becomes an almost impossible obstacle.

Currently, more than 20 children attending the school cannot pay their school fees. Without financial assistance, these children risk interruptions in their studies, or worse, having to drop out of school.

This sponsorship project aims to lift this burden by covering the school fees of children in need, so that none of them is deprived of the right to learn, dream, and build their future.

By supporting this program, you help break the cycle of poverty and give these children a real chance to succeed—for themselves, their families, and their entire community.

A small gesture from you can change their lives. Together, let’s give them the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, regardless of their financial situation.
Sponsor a child today — and plant a seed of hope for tomorrow!

Qualified Teachers
Project

We fund the salaries of trained teachers to ensure quality teaching, and support our volunteers in their mission.

One teacher, one future: help us maintain excellence!

At the School of Hope in Kibera, providing quality education remains a daily challenge. Due to a lack of resources, the school relies largely on volunteer support, as most families cannot afford the fees required to pay trained teachers.

The good news is that thanks to the efforts of Principal Gabriel, Teacher Jane, a qualified and passionate teacher, has joined the team to supervise the volunteer teachers and provide professional support to the students.
But to keep Teacher Jane and ensure the implementation of the new curriculum (CBC), we need your support.
By funding her salary, you are investing in a fairer education, supporting the children of Kibera, and helping to build a brighter future.

Support education, support hope. Donate today!

Go-Green (Tree planting)
Project

Promotes environmental awareness by involving students and volunteers in planting trees around the school and community.

What if you planted a tree today?

Planting trees has been mentioned severally, as one of the most important actions we can do today to ensure the sustainability of the planet, by significantly addressing 4/9 of important boundaries that ensure life:
-Stabilizing the climate,
-Improving Fresh Water,
-Improving Planet Diversity and
-Food production benefits;
Plus highly improving the other sustainability boundaries.

In Kibera and other informal settlements, access to nature is limited, yet its impact is vital—improving air quality, promoting biodiversity, and restoring hope.
The School of Hope is proud to launch its annual Go-Green Tree Planting project, aiming to instill environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility in students who often grow up without exposure to green spaces. This initiative not only improves the environment but also empowers children to care for their community.

Volunteers play a key role in this meaningful event, working alongside students and teachers to plant trees in and around the school. The planting takes place during the rainy season to ensure the trees thrive. Participants will also take part in a symbolic walk to the planting site, helping to foster personal connections and shared purpose between volunteers and the local community.

Join the Go-Green movement and plant a tree of hope!
